The problem

Indian students navigating career choices face a uniquely chaotic landscape — hundreds of government exam categories, 80+ distinct career tracks across tech, design, finance, and civil services, and almost no personalised guidance that accounts for their specific skills, salary targets, and timeline.

Generic career counselling apps built for Western markets missed the nuances entirely: UPSC preparation timelines, SSC eligibility windows, the reality of a ₹3 LPA starting salary vs a ₹20 LPA target, and the specific resources that actually help Indian students pass competitive exams.

The brief was to build something that felt like having a knowledgeable senior in your corner — one who understood both the aspiration and the constraints.

What we built

The core is an AI career matching engine powered by Claude. Users input their skills, interests, education level, location, and salary goal — the model returns a ranked list of career paths with fit scores and rationale. From there, a week-by-week learning roadmap is generated with curated resources: courses, books, practice platforms, and milestone checkpoints.

We built a government exam module from scratch — tracking 25+ exams across UPSC, SSC, Banking, and Railways categories, with eligibility checks, notification alerts, and prep timeline integration into the user's roadmap. A student targeting both a tech job and banking backup could manage both tracks in a single view.

The job application tracker handled interview scheduling and stage tracking. A streak system with daily scoring kept users engaged. The ReactFlow-based roadmap visualiser let users see the full week-by-week path at a glance and drill into any task.

Monetisation was handled through Razorpay subscriptions: a free tier with one roadmap, and Pro plans at ₹100/month or ₹900/year — accessible price points for students and early-career professionals.

Tech decisions

Next.js 16 with App Router handled both the marketing pages and the authenticated app shell. PostgreSQL with Prisma gave us a type-safe schema across users, career paths, roadmaps, tasks, job applications, exam tracking, and subscription state.

NextAuth v5 with JWT handled auth, with bcrypt password hashing for credential logins. Zustand managed client state. Activity logging was built in from day one — every roadmap update, task completion, and coaching session is recorded for analytics and for feeding back into the AI coaching context.
